A beautiful hotel which would have been perfect, had it not been for the buffoons who accused us of having not paid for the room before arrival – which I had done 6 months ago when booking it. They were fixated on money over everything else, and fail with the most woeful customer service I’ve ever experienced in a hotel. Would have been 9/10, but the experience gained it a 0/10.
Accommodation Review – Pillows, Ghent
A very nice hotel, let down a little bit by the aloofness of (some of) the staff. Otherwise a very comfortable stay in a great location. 8/10
When we arrived in the dark it was quite hard to find this hotel, and once found we were advised to move our car as it might be fined, and roadworks outside meant unloading was tricky. The hotel car park was almost €50 a night, so we were advised a nearby underground public car park would be perfectly fine as an alternative at only €15 a night. However the hotel staff didn’t do the best job explaining where it was and I spent 15 minutes driving round Ghent’s horrible one way system to find it.
The hotel and room were lovely, very up-market and modern, just as we like it. Room was a little small but I’d not booked anything bigger and the location meant we had to make compromises to avoid bankruptcy. Jo said the swimming pool and sauna were nice, and it was very quiet helped by our room overlooking the hotel’s quadrangle garden. Shower was excellent, something that’s become a test of hotel room quality!!
We’d visit again, but the staff need to cheer up a bit and be more helpful!
Accommodation Review – Schlosshotel Steinburg, Wurzburg
A very fancy, up market hotel perched on the hill above Wurzburg amongst the vineyards. An old castle with add-ons of various ages, it was obviously trying to be a destination hotel given the quality of the restaurant, and mostly succeeded. 8/10.
The hotel itself was very nice, with sympathetic new building and decoration amongst some obviously very old part of the building. Good facilities too, with a pool and sauna area.
The room we booked appeared to unwittingly be their best one, with a view over the city from a balcony in the old castle section above the restaurant, though the plumbing could have been better as the flow of water out of the shower was slow and temperature fluctuated far too much for comfort or safety!
Food was the highlight though, with dinner being a choice between 3, 4, 5 or 6 courses picking from a menu that you could literally mix and match in any order – you could have 4 starters, or begin with dessert and work back. Being British we had 3 courses in the correct order, of course. Breakfast was equally good.
We’d definitely recommend this one to anyone wanting a posh hotel with good food, just be prepared for the bill on departure!
Accommodation Review – Rioca, Stuttgart
A simple travellers hotel, we saw families and people on business in this Brazilian-themed stop. Very friendly and helpful staff, and comfortable. View from the room was rather industrial! 6/10
A relatively standard hotel, the breakfast included Brazilian treats which were excellent, and the room had a small kitchen (which we didn’t use) and hanging chair which was limited to 90kg according to the numerous signs.

Accommodation Review – Krumers Alpin, Seefeld-in-Tirol
In contrast to most other stops, some of which were half the cost, this hotel was very disappointing. Rubbish welcome on arrival, dinner was tailored to the buffet we didn’t want (though we had good food from a very limited a la carte menu), and the aroma of cigarette smoke isn’t our thing (maybe Austria isn’t our thing?!) 2/10.
It’s a bit odd, this place. The communal areas (reception, restaurant, bar, spa) are all very modern and luxurious. The rooms (or our room, in case there are differences) were old fashioned and not completely clean (numerous cobwebs at ceiling level).
Food was good, but the focus on the dinner buffet meant the a la carte was limited and the food took ages to arrive (probably because the chef was focussed on churning out the buffet items).
We won’t be returning, and we would not recommend it.
Accommodation Review – Sunstar Pontresina, Pontresina
Our favourite hotel on the trip so far, and actually one of our favourite hotels full stop. It’s exactly what we want from a hotel in every way (apart from one…see below). 9.5/10
This hotel had it all – extremely modern, beautifully decorated, and the staff wanted you to treat it like it was your home. It’s rare to find hotels like this. On arrival nothing was too much effort for the hotel staff and they worked hard to look after you. Even the hand written welcome note on the bed was a sign this was going to be a good stay.
The town of Pontresina didn’t offer much in the way of open restaurants which were not part of hotels, and even some hotels were closed, so we ate dinner in our hotel both nights. The food was fabulous at dinner, and breakfast.

It had one failing. It’s worth knowing that was definitely NOT an inexpensive hotel, which was partly due to being in Switzerland, but that’s no excuse for charging €3.50 for a carafe of tap water at dinner. What are you thinking Sunstar…..
We would definitely go back to this hotel and stay for a week, it was that good.
Accommodation Review – Neuro Campus Hotel DAS MORGEN, Vitznau
A modern hotel, with slightly confusing half floors meaning depending on which lift you took, stairs were always required!! Food paid for by weight. Not your weight. The weight of the food. 8/10
Obviously a hotel which catered for business and leisure, but extremely nice nevertheless. The room was spacious, the shower the best yet, and the view from the room was lovely. The car had 2 spaces as it wouldn’t fit in one – no other cars managed to fit in 1 space, so we felt vindicated.
We opted for dinner in the hotel as very few other restaurants were open (and didn’t look that good). An odd experience, as it was a buffet which you paid for by weight, so you could pick what you want then take it to the scales, and pay for what you took. I wanted a paper plate instead of the heavy stoneware item.
In contrast, breakfast was a buffet without the need to weigh anything. Good job really!
Accommodation Review – Hôtel & Spa La Villa K, Saint Louis
Very nice hotel, with inability to heat water resulting in tepid showers and free breakfast! 6/10.
Everything was going so well until we had showers, and the water wasn’t anywhere near warm enough. Otherwise comfortable, quiet, and good continental breakfast with fruity bread that Jo liked a lot. Breakfast was meant to be €30 but cost us nothing because of the tepid water.
Accommodation Review – Hotel Schuetzen, Rastatt
This hotel brings a new meaning to self-service, as you check-in via a Ring doorbell!! Great location, overlooking a river, very comfortable and spacious room, excellent breakfast. 8/10.
We needed a hotel near Baden-Baden, the start of the Black Forest route, but sadly all hotels in that town were full due to a conference. Finding a nearby hotel was a challenge, but having stumbled upon this one at €100 I thought I’d give it a go.
As it turned out, great choice! OK so the town it was in was on life support, with only 2 open restaurants we could find through Google and walking the town centre, and the town itself had more boarded up shops than open ones, but it was still a nice place and we had some excellent food in both the restaurant we picked and breakfast at the hotel. Actually a really good stopover!
